These three paintings were selected from a larger body of paintings and drawings I did with a commission from the Mexican Ministry of Culture. Part of my proposal was to exhibit my work in marginalized areas on the periphery of Mexico City, and its interior, to a public which normally does not have access to the art world. One aspect of the 5 individual shows, was to dialogue with that public about my art. One of my shows hung in the Zocalo Metro for a month. I talked to people about their reactions as they walked past the showcases of my artwork on the way to the turnstiles to get on the metro, while a friend of mine made a video. Although I had worked teaching art in Mexican institutions in the Mexico City area from 1996-2005, I was totally surprised by the candid reactions of this highly varied public. I would like to dedicate a word of thanks to the generous, intelligent and warm spirit of the Mexican people, who extended the most gracious welcome and worked with me, an American, throughout those years. They inspired me in ways I can only paint.
